The little girl heard the doorknob turn. Her heart beat hard as she looked for a place to hide, but there was no time. Already, he stood in the door grinning at her. She knew what he wanted. She knew she must do it-or else. The girl was born unwanted. From the beginning, her mother's family vilified her. She bounced from school to school, struggling, failing, always an outsider. Men sought to use her for one thing only; they never saw her as a person. How the girl longed to show her value. How she longed to be a part of-to have a friend. To join others, she made decisions-bad decisions-that pushed her further and further down a path toward hell. By the time she was a young women, the girl, Brenda, reached a low so hopeless she no longer wished to live. Coat-less, she slipped outside into the frigid Alaskan winter and waited. Then a mysterious voice she'd heard once or twice before called to her. This is a true story of events told to the author by "Brenda Kramer."

It has been a packed journey since Betty Jo Goddard's birth. While on that journey, she acquired a B.S. from Illinois State, an M.A. from The University of Colorado, and twenty-five years of teaching's bruises, successes, smiles, and love. She now lives on a ridge-top in Alaska with her aging husky. In her retirement years, she took up writing as a hobby. This hobby stimulated long dormant juices, nudged her into inquiry, and, when she tossed her lines in publishing world's waters, brought her enough bites to buy treats for her dog(s). She has published two other books and her stories have appeared in Dog and Kennel, Grit, Writers' Journal, Cup of Comfort anthology, Dream of Things anthology, Chalk Circle anthology, and other anthologies and publications both on and off line.
