Value Your Life Supplemental Mental Health Curriculum Grades K-5

Suicide is a rising problem in young peoples' lives today and one belief that is commonly present in those who attempt or die by suicide is the belief that their life has very little value. "Value Your Life" is a six-week curriculum that teaches the truth that each human being has innate and unique value. This curriculum is based on the belief that every human life matters. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide education, tools and opportunities to hear, understand and practice the truth that our lives have value. Many of our students are not aware or fail to recognize the value that they bring to the world they live in. It is important for all of us and specifically our students, to have the opportunity to hear, understand and practice the truth that they are valuable. This can enlarge their capacity to live life in a healthy way during the difficult and sometimes traumatic experiences that they will encounter. Each of the six sessions is fully scripted and is best facilitated by those who are in regular contact with the students. Teachers, parents, caregivers and school counselors all fit into that category and can work through this curriculum with ease. Each unit combines teaching, activities and practice, which are more beneficial when modeled by the facilitators as the students practice alongside them. None of us are born into this world as professionals in any area. We have to learn and then practice. We practice basketball, we practice language learning, we practice walking and talking. We need to learn how to live a life marked by the truth that we are valuable and then practice that. This learning and practicing the truth that we are valuable, more than any other practice, has the capacity to determine the outcome of all areas in our lives.
