Rolling Shelter is a personal account of Kelly and Rosana Hart's life in two different buses, three vans, two small motor homes, two travel trailers combined into one house, and two cars. Kelly tells stories of how they traveled through Mexico and Guatemala in a small van and then later developed a splendid home on their llama ranch in the mountains of Oregon. This book will inspire you and give you some ideas for how you might take advantage of vehicles to provide shelter in your life. In full color, the book features over 200 photographs and 5 detailed floor plans. With descriptions of how the conversions were accomplished, it is valuable both as an overview of vehicular dwelling and as a construction manual for how you might convert your own. One of the true joys of living in a vehicle is that it can be moved to new and exciting locations with relative ease. If you like to travel, but prefer to have your own bed and your own kitchen, then consider living in a motor home of some sort. The chapters include: -"Our First Bus Home" shows the artistic conversion of a school bus parked on the rugged California coast. -"Extra Wheels" describes a versatile step van and a Navy radar van used as a film studio. -"Van Dwelling" features a Ford Econoline van equipped for travel into remote places and a VW Vanagon camper. -"Juniper Ridge" shows how they made a unique home combining two long travel trailers into one home that could accommodate some of their llamas. -"Tortuga & CanDo" were both small Dolphin motor homes built on Toyota trucks. -"Here & There" was a full scale conversion of a 40 foot inter-city bus in which they traveled around the western United States.

Kelly Hart has been involved in media most of his life, initially working as a professional photographer, and then branching into cinematography and animation. He has produced many film, video and DVD programs related to his interests in sustainable architecture, cultural education, and animal behavior. Kelly patented a process for making animated movies that involves manipulating a continuously malleable pigment directly under a camera. The resulting animation appears like an oil painting in motion. He recently published a book of photographs that he took as a young man in the San Francisco Bay Area, titled "San Francisco's Psychedelic Sixties: A Photographic Trip with Kelly Hart" As a writer, he has established several websites related to sustainable architecture and written numerous articles on this topic. www.greenhomebuilding.com has been active since 2000 and www.dreamgreenhomes.com was established soon after. Now he hosts www.earthbagbuilding.com and www.naturalbuildingblog.com as well. Kelly has had a lifelong interest in building and has worked in construction professionally. For many years he did remodeling for clients and also on his own projects. He once built his own house with innovative earthbags and papercrete. Kelly and his wife, Rosana Hart, operate their website, www.hartworks.com, which describes many of the books and DVDs that they sell. One DVD that they produced is titled "A Sampler of Alternative Homes: Approaching Sustainable Architecture", which profiles numerous natural building methods and tours many homes and interviews the builders or owners. This program, along with one about building an earthbag house, called "Building with Bags" is available on the websites. www.sunvee.com describes a solar electric vehicle that Kelly built and drove around his community for many years. www.which-hobbit.com describes a fictionalized autobiography available as an e-book that Kelly wrote. Kelly continues to be an advocate for sustainable living through his writing and occasionally training people in specific building techniques.
