James Duvall is professor emeritus of Earth Sciences from Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California. He has a background in archaeology, geography, and geology. His major interests outside of teaching and research are flying, flight instruction, and ocean sailing with his wife, Pamela. Dr. Duvall has been an avid fan of the United States Space Program since day one. As a candidate for the Teacher in Space Program (TISP), he was horrified by the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger and mourned not only the loss of the crew, but the damage to the program. For over four decades Dr. Duvall has been a pilot, having flown dozens of different airframes. Much of his experience in the earth sciences and aviation are included in his fiction works.
