In place of a biography, this is the obituary of a "ghost excavator". Though still alive, I have become a "ghost". I haunt the places I have excavated, and the individuals (and their remains) that I have unearthed. I "spook" those I lecture to at conferences and seminars. I am the "phantom" presence that lurks between the words, theories, and methodologies in my books and research papers! This is my epitaph: Read and remember it, and don't forget to inscribe it! As always, Loren Eiseley says it best: "To this day, fragments of his unused wisdom remain stuffed in some back attic of my mind. Much of it I have never found the opportunity to employ. Yet, it has somehow colored my whole adult existence". At the "end" (whenever that comes), I hope to be remembered as that person, the "hidden teacher". Do I have ideas and concepts that perhaps were developed and spoken about in the wrong era and culture? How many people have I reached today.....and tomorrow? How many individuals will I reach at some far future time and location? Will these ideas, after lying dormant for a time, spring once more to "life" (instead of the "ghost" of my former self) as they are "unearthed" in a more auspicious and opportunistic time? Only time, and a future archaeologist, will know for sure......and tell a story (albeit a "ghost story") about the discovery!
