My father Vernon Overcash wrote to my mother Evelyn McCorkle almost every day after he was drafted into the United States Army in World War II. She saved all his letters. I didn't want to read these letters but after I did I realized how much more was in them. This is the story of the army life of a young draftee as he tries to cope with being so far away from his rural home. These letters tell us about the economic impact that war has on a small farming community, Enochville, N.C. Two young people from Enochville share stories through their letters to each other about movies they have seen, social gatherings. blackouts and gas rationing. A relationship develops. We enter the story with the first letter dated April 20, 1942, sent from Fort Bragg, N.C. through September 25, 1943, from Ventura, California. There are more letters. The story will continue in the next book.
