Carstensz Stone Age to Iron Age

Carstensz Pyramid is the highest peak in Indonesia. It is one of the most difficult and rarely climbed of the Seven Summits. It requires trekking through equatorial jungles and rock climbing steep jagged limestone cliffs with frayed fixed ropes. It's mountaineering and adventure travel at an extreme level. Previous expeditions here have reported robbery, extortion, detention, bribery, abandonment, kidnapping, violence, and privation. State departments have issued warnings and alerts to avoid this mountain. There are no helicopters or rescue teams. Carstensz is not a forgiving mountain. One misstep here can lead to disaster. In April of 2013 the author was gravely injured while trekking through the muddy jungle, yet persisted in the face of adversity to climb at any cost. There is always some risk in adventure travel, and in defiance of all the warnings, a small group of climbers takes a shortcut out of the jungle and pays the price.
