In 1999, when I first drew Chuck Close, whom I have known since the early SoHo days, I had no idea that I was embarking on a series that would eventually comprise eighty-one drawings. But I found myself returning to the subject at four different periods over the next sixteen years. In this book the drawings from each period are arranged into a sequence, and the four periods, taken in order, tell the story of my evolving appreciation of what Chuck means to me.

Author Details

Artist David Stoltz, born in 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, is primarily known for his sculpture. His work is in the permanent collections of the Storm King Art Center, Sagamore Hotel, Australia National Museum, Detroit Institute of The Arts, among many others. His school years were spent in sculpture and graphics. Among many awards, he has been the recipient of two National Endowments for the Arts, illustrated a children's book and lectured extensively.
