The story is about Newland Arche, a gentleman who is a lawyer and the heir to one of the most illustrious families in New York City. He was set to wed the sheltered and beautiful May Welland but is intrigued by the worldly and semi-scandalous Countess Ellen Olenska, May's cousin.
