Each page contains four groups of five paw prints. So, a younger child can count 1-10 or 1-20 while an older child can count by fives, tens, or twenty. There are a total of 680 paw prints to count in this book! Compare/Contrast: As Mouse shares his story, he talks in terms of how small he is compared to his much bigger, taller, and longer littermates. These words, and their synonyms, vary in font size to aid children in their understanding. Color Recognition: Mouse points out various items of color throughout this book, including black, brown, white, yellow, green, pink, orange, red, blue, and purple. These words are written in their respective colors. This helps younger children learn their colors or older children recognize color words faster. In addition, the counting paw prints are in different colors, so a parent can assist a younger child with color recognition. Each page is visibly numbered 1-33 so a child can count pages for number recognition. Mouse and Kudos play hide-n-seek and Mouse counts from ninety through 100, a skill kindergartners must learn. Alida Scheiderer has a Master's in Arts & Teaching. Her children's books include subtle age-appropriate educational themes. Her middle grade novel, A Kingdom to Call Her Own, was in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 American Breakthrough Novel Award contest where she won a Publisher's Weekly Review of her work. She currently breeds AKC Labrador Retrievers with world champion bloodlines while she writes a variety of children's, middle grade, and young adult fiction. She has also written two television preschool spec pilots that she hopes to have optioned someday.
