After leaving school, she went on to study French and English Literature at Keele University, where she also became interested in astronomy, which she took as a subsidiary subject during her first year and which led to a fascination with astrophysics and quantum theory. After taking up a secretarial post in New Bond Street, London then working briefly as a croupier for Playboy, London she decided to train to be a teacher. She graduated from Queens' College Cambridge with a PGCE and completed her probationary year at Stantonbury Campus in Milton Keynes.
